Dylan Garand stopped all 22 shots for his first NHL shutout as the New York Rangers beat the Detroit Red Wings 2–0 at Little Caesars Arena on Friday.
Sean Durzi opened the scoring on the power play at 5:12 of the first period, with assists from Gabe Perreault and Will Cuylle. It was Durzi’s first goal as a Ranger.
That lead lasted until Eeli Tolvanen scored into an empty net with 1:16 remaining. Tye Kartye and Adam Fox assisted on the goal. Detroit finished with a 22–21 advantage in shots, while John Gibson made 19 saves.
Garand earned a point in each of his first four NHL appearances, taking his career record to 3–0–1, according to the Rangers’ postgame notes. New York improved to 2–1–0 and completed a sweep of its first back-to-back set.
The Rangers had beaten Tampa Bay 5–1 Thursday, when Igor Shesterkin scored the first goalie goal in franchise history. Detroit began its season without Dylan Larkin, who is on injured reserve.
