Dylan Larkin rejoined Red Wings practice Wednesday but remains unavailable for Thursday’s preseason game against Buffalo as he recovers from an upper-body injury. His return was his first practice with the team this fall.
Larkin was not assigned to a regular line during the session. Coach Todd McLellan said the center had progressed in his off-ice work and stayed out for the full practice, longer than the coach had anticipated.
Saturday’s exhibition against Columbus remains a possibility, although McLellan did not commit to playing him. Detroit opens its regular season against the Rangers on October 2, and a practice appearance alone does not establish that Larkin will be ready.
Larkin also returned with his trade request unresolved, having asked for a move after last season. His recovery and his future with Detroit remain separate questions as the team approaches its opener.
