Connor Hellebuyck’s suspension by the Winnipeg Jets is scheduled to end Friday, October 23, according to a Saturday report by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The reported date would make the goaltender eligible to rejoin the team, without confirming when he will play again.

Friedman reported that Hellebuyck told Winnipeg before its October 2 season opener that he intended to end his absence and report. The Jets had not authorized him to stay away from training camp.

The report cited Article 15.13(c)(v) of the collective bargaining agreement, which provides for a suspension of reasonable length when a player returns after missing camp without permission. Friedman’s sources identified October 23 as the end of that period.

Friedman identified paying Hellebuyck to stay home as one possibility for the Jets if a trade does not resolve the situation before then.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff and Hellebuyck’s agent, Ray Petkau, declined to comment to Sportsnet.
