Felix Auger-Aliassime retired from his Shanghai Masters fourth-round match against Casper Ruud Wednesday while trailing 5–2 in the first set. The ATP’s official results recorded Ruud’s victory by retirement after 35 minutes.

Tennishead reported that the Canadian appeared to hurt his knee on a serve and stopped after consulting coach Ivan Ljubicic. Ruud said in his post-match comments that Auger-Aliassime seemed to be in pain after an awkward step earlier in the set.

The retirement sent the 20th-seeded Ruud into the Shanghai quarterfinals for the first time. He will face Rafael Jodar, who advanced past Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets Wednesday.

Auger-Aliassime, the fourth seed, was still pursuing qualification for the season-ending ATP Finals. His departure ended the match before either player completed a set. Ruud wished him a quick recovery, while the match report did not provide a medical diagnosis or a return timetable for the Canadian.
