Amar’e Stoudemire has completed police academy training and will begin working with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, Miami Dade College announced this week.

The 43-year-old former NBA star graduated from the college’s School of Justice Basic Law Enforcement Academy. The college said becoming a police officer had been a childhood ambition, influenced in part by relatives who worked in law enforcement, Field Level Media reported.

Stoudemire’s new job comes in the same year he entered the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. His playing career included six All-Star selections and five All-NBA selections.

Phoenix selected him ninth overall in the 2002 draft directly out of high school. He won the 2003 Rookie of the Year award and became a central player in the Suns’ high-scoring teams under Mike D’Antoni, earning All-NBA First Team honors in 2007.

Stoudemire later joined the Knicks and finished his NBA career with stops in Dallas and Miami. Across 846 regular-season games, he averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds.

His last NBA season was 2015–16 with the Heat. He continued playing professionally overseas before moving toward his new career in school policing.
