The Vancouver Canucks are among the teams interested in Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday Headlines. Friedman said a move is not imminent.
The report follows Calgary’s decision to place Zary on waivers on Monday, October 5. He cleared and joined the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, scoring in his first game back on Friday, according to Sportsnet’s account.
Zary carries a $3.775 million annual salary-cap hit. Sportsnet reported that Vancouver has nearly $16 million in projected cap space and could absorb his contract, while the Flames are not looking to retain salary in a potential trade.
The forward is in the second season of a three-year contract worth $11.325 million. Calgary selected him 24th overall in the 2020 draft. He recorded 12 goals and 13 assists in 74 NHL games last season.
Friedman described Vancouver as one of several teams considering Zary. His report identified interest rather than an agreed transaction; no terms were announced.
Sunday’s follow-up coverage examined the contract and roster considerations behind that interest. The key outstanding issue remains whether Calgary and a prospective buyer can agree on a move without salary retention.
