How Ennis’s New Deal Fits the 154-Pound Unification Picture
Ennis and Josh Kelly renewed with Matchroom on the same day. Here is where the four major belts stand and why promotional agreements do not settle the title fights.

Jaron Ennis’ new seven-fight Matchroom agreement keeps two holders of the major 154-pound titles under the same promoter. Ennis holds the WBA and WBO championships, while Josh Kelly holds the IBF belt. Kelly announced his own Matchroom extension on the same day, October 20. The division’s remaining major title belongs to WBC champion Sebastian Fundora.
That arrangement makes an Ennis–Kelly unification a clear route toward collecting three belts. It does not complete the negotiations or supply the sanctioning approvals needed to put those championships in one fight. Neither of Matchroom’s two contract announcements provides a bout date or venue.
Where the four belts stand
The WBA’s current champions list identifies Ennis at super welterweight. The WBO’s own list also names him as its 154-pound champion, dating his reign to June 27, 2026. Those are the two titles he took from Xander Zayas.
| Organization | Champion |
|---|---|
| WBA | Jaron Ennis |
| WBO | Jaron Ennis |
| IBF | Josh Kelly |
| WBC | Sebastian Fundora |
The IBF lists Kelly as its junior middleweight champion. Fundora kept the WBC championship by knocking out Ermal Hadribeaj at 2:59 of the 12th round on October 17, according to the WBC’s result report. His belt is therefore still part of the unification picture after last weekend’s defense.
What sharing a promoter changes
Matchroom’s Ennis announcement covers his next seven fights and identifies becoming undisputed as his objective. The separate Kelly announcement confirms a multi-fight extension and his interest in unifications. It does not specify the same seven-fight term.
For an Ennis–Kelly matchup, Matchroom would be working with two champions already committed to its promotional operation. That creates a different negotiating arrangement from a fight involving a champion whose recent defense was presented by Premier Boxing Champions. PBC promoted Fundora’s October 17 bout; its involvement in that event does not establish the terms of any future unification.
A seven-fight agreement also does not mean seven named opponents or seven championship bouts have been announced. The contract covers the promotional relationship. An individual fight still needs its own arrangements, including the opponent, event date and place.
Why the sanctioning bodies still matter
The WBA’s published rules distinguish a promoter’s plans from championship recognition. Rule C.18 keeps unified champions subject to mandatory-defense requirements. It provides for approval through a special permit when the opponent is someone other than the WBA’s mandatory contender.
Rules C.39–40 allow exceptions for unification and give those requests special consideration. Approval remains discretionary and can carry conditions. A shared promoter does not remove that decision or establish that an exception has already been granted.
The WBO’s current Ennis entry lists his next mandatory as to be determined. That entry should not be turned into a claim that every sanctioning obligation has been cleared. The next firm developments to look for are an official bout announcement and the relevant championship decisions.
How the route could work
If Ennis and Kelly meet with all three of their titles at stake, the winner could emerge holding the WBA, WBO and IBF belts. Adding Fundora’s WBC championship would then be the remaining step toward holding all four. That is the championship arithmetic, subject to the belts remaining with those fighters and being sanctioned for the proposed bouts.
The new Ennis deal gives that pursuit an established promotional home. The current title map explains why Kelly and Fundora matter; signed promotional extensions alone do not settle when either matchup happens.
