Maresca’s Record Start Meets Manchester City’s Attacking Depth Test

Seven opening league wins have demonstrated City’s rotation options. Semenyo’s injury removes a winger and a possible Haaland deputy as Maresca considers how to share the attacking work.

Manchester City’s seventh league win under Enzo Maresca showed how much their attack can change around Erling Haaland. With Antoine Semenyo injured, the question before Tuesday’s Champions League game is how City preserve that flexibility without one of their planned alternatives at center forward.

A successful rotation, then a missing option

Maresca made six changes for Saturday’s 3–2 win over Ipswich, bringing Matheus Nunes, Nico O’Reilly, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Mateo Kovačić, Phil Foden and Iliman Ndiaye into the starting side. He told City’s postmatch program that resting players after their international commitments had been part of the preparation.

The result supported his willingness to use the squad. Those changes included midfielders, defenders and attackers, rather than a single replacement inserted into an otherwise unchanged team. Foden scored on his return, Ndiaye supplied Haaland’s second goal, and City collected another three points.

Semenyo entered for Jérémy Doku in the 77th minute, according to the official match report. His knee injury later in the game removed a winger and a potential alternative through the middle at the same time.

Haaland cover remains a separate decision

In his pre-AEK press conference, Maresca said Semenyo’s scan had been less concerning than initially feared, while estimating an absence of approximately eight weeks. He also confirmed that using Semenyo as a number nine had been one of City’s plans.

Maresca’s explanation left the replacement open: “We have some different options and we’ll see tomorrow.”

His assessment of Haaland was also conditional. The striker had improved after the knock against Ipswich and could be available for AEK, but Maresca said the decision still depended on further assessment. That is an October 19 fitness update for the European game, rather than a confirmed selection for Saturday’s league visit to Aston Villa.

City’s Semenyo and Haaland injury report covers the medical announcement. The wider issue is the allocation of attacking minutes: replacing Semenyo’s wing involvement is one decision; finding someone to lead the line when Haaland rests is another. A successful performance in one role would not by itself settle the other.

Foden gives the record a different dimension

Foden’s return supplied a positive development alongside that uncertainty. Back from a three-match suspension, he scored his first goal since the previous December. Maresca’s assessment of Foden emphasized restoring his best form, with the manager hoping the Ipswich performance would begin a more productive run.

The opening goal illustrated a contribution beyond the central striker: Doku reached the space to deliver a cutback and Foden arrived to finish it. Haaland then scored twice, the second from Ndiaye’s pass. Those sequences show attacking contributions from several players without establishing who would replace Haaland as the number nine.

City’s record summary puts the opening seven league games at 19 goals scored and six conceded. Maresca became the first manager to win his first seven Premier League matches in charge of a club, exceeding the six-win starts of Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The next selection has a different personnel problem from the opening stretch. City host AEK on October 20 before visiting Villa on Saturday, October 24, at 5:30 a.m. MT. This assessment precedes the AEK match; neither that result nor a final Villa availability decision is included.
