Leylah Fernandez was eliminated from the Wuhan Open on Thursday, losing 6–1, 1–6, 6–4 to Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16.

The Canadian recovered from a one-sided opening set by winning six consecutive games in the second. She then fought back from a break down in the decider to level it at 4–4, The Canadian Press reported.

Ostapenko broke again in the next game and served out the match. The Latvian improved to 2–0 against Fernandez and advanced to a quarterfinal against Diana Shnaider.

There was progress for Canada in doubles. Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani, the top seeds, beat Ulrikke Eikeri and Quinn Gleason 6–1, 6–3.

Dabrowski and Stefani next face Giuliana Olmos and Ingrid Neel in Friday’s quarterfinals, keeping their run alive after Fernandez’s singles exit.

Elsewhere in the singles draw, Maja Chwalińska reached the last eight by beating Iva Jovic. She will face Maria Sakkari after earning the highest-ranked victory of her career.
