The Washington Capitals recalled defenseman Justin Holl from the Hershey Bears on Monday and placed Rasmus Sandin on long-term injured reserve and Matt Roy on injured reserve.
General manager Chris Patrick announced the moves in a team statement. Holl has appeared in three games for Hershey this season.
The recall gives Washington another experienced defenseman while Sandin and Roy are unavailable. The announcement did not establish a return date for either injured player or promise Holl a particular role in the lineup.
Holl, 34, played nine NHL games with St. Louis last season, recording a goal and an assist. He also had 14 points in 41 games with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
His NHL experience includes 405 games with St. Louis, Detroit and Toronto. He has accumulated 14 goals and 83 assists across those appearances.
Chicago selected Holl in the second round of the 2010 draft. His career also includes extensive AHL experience, which Washington can now draw upon as it manages its defensive depth.
The two reserve designations and Holl’s recall were announced together. Further team updates will determine how Washington’s available defensemen are deployed.
