MEDINAH, Ill. — The United States produced a record Sunday singles performance to beat the International team 17–13 at the Presidents Cup, extending its winning streak in the competition to 11 editions.
Trailing 10½–7½ entering the final day at Medinah Country Club, the Americans won nine matches and tied another to collect 9½ of the 12 available points. Rookie Jacob Bridgeman secured the decisive point with a 1-up victory over Min Woo Lee.
The comeback turned a promising International position into another American celebration. Captain Geoff Ogilvy’s team had swept Friday’s foursomes and carried a three-point cushion into singles, only to lose much of that advantage as the early matches finished.
Cameron Young opened the scoring with a 3-and-2 victory over Ryo Hisatsune. Justin Thomas beat Corey Conners 5 and 3, while Scottie Scheffler defeated Nico Echavarria 2 and 1 to keep the United States moving toward the lead.
Tom Kim and Sungjae Im supplied the International team’s only full points on Sunday. Kim beat Wyndham Clark, and Im defeated Sam Burns, but the remaining matches increasingly favoured the hosts.
Chris Gotterup, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay added American victories. Cantlay’s long birdie putt at the 16th helped him close out Adam Scott, while Morikawa edged Hideki Matsuyama on the final hole.
Jackson Koivun then beat Si Woo Kim 2 up, completing an unbeaten Presidents Cup debut. Bridgeman followed by overturning a late deficit against Lee, whose bogey at the 18th allowed the American to claim the match and ensure the trophy would stay with the United States.
Xander Schauffele finished with a 2-and-1 win over Ryan Fox. Russell Henley and Canada’s Nick Taylor shared the point in their match, completing the final margin.
The United States finished with the largest final-day comeback in Presidents Cup history. For captain Brandt Snedeker, it completed a reversal after a difficult opening three days; for the Internationals, it extended a wait for a second title that dates to their lone victory in 1998.
