Oklahoma opens SEC play at No. 2 Georgia on Saturday in a matchup between the nation’s highest-scoring offense and a Sooners defense that has allowed only two touchdowns through three games.
Kickoff at Sanford Stadium in Athens is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Georgia is 3–0 overall and 1–0 in conference play, while Oklahoma is 2–1 entering its first SEC game of the season.
The Bulldogs are averaging 59.3 points and 539 yards per game. They followed home victories of 63–3 over Tennessee State and 70–20 over Western Kentucky with a 45–17 win at Arkansas to open their conference schedule.
Georgia has outscored its opponents 178–40, including a 56–0 margin in the first quarter. Its opening SEC win at Arkansas followed two home games in which the Bulldogs scored at least 60 points, according to the school’s game notes.
Oklahoma ranks fourth nationally in scoring defense at 7.7 points allowed per game and ninth in total defense at 215.3 yards. The Sooners are also allowing 104.3 passing yards per game and averaging four sacks, according to their official game primer.
“It is fundamentally sound, aggressive, and attacking,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Monday of Brent Venables’ defense. Smart credited Oklahoma’s coaches and players for their work against blocks, defensive technique and ability to produce sacks and tackles for loss.
Their most recent win was a 14–6 result against New Mexico, which managed 185 total yards and did not score a touchdown. Oklahoma held the Lobos to 69 rushing yards and forced punts on seven of their 10 possessions.
John Mateer completed 19 of 25 passes for 238 yards in that victory. His touchdown throws covered 29 yards to tight end Hayden Hansen and 53 yards to Isaiah Sategna III, who finished with six catches for 101 yards.
Saturday will be the second meeting between the programs and their first on either school’s campus. Georgia won the first matchup 54–48 in double overtime at the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2018, advancing from a College Football Playoff semifinal.
Oklahoma won its SEC road opener at Auburn in 2024 and at South Carolina in 2025. This week, the Sooners are unranked in the Associated Press poll and No. 24 in the coaches poll.
