Tarik Skubal's Limited WBC Role Misses The Point

Tarik Skubal will make only one start for Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic before returning to the Tigers — and that limited role draws criticism.

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal is set to make only one start for Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic before returning to prepare for the Major League Baseball season. Skubal confirmed the plan at Detroit’s spring training facility in Florida, saying he will pitch in a pool play game — likely against one of the early opponents in Houston — and then head back to Tigers camp to continue his season build-up.⁽¹⁾

Skubal, a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner (2024, 2025) and successive ERA leader, is one of the premier arms in baseball and a central figure in Detroit’s rotation.⁽¹⁾ His 2025 season was historic: he finished 13–6 with a 2.21 ERA, 241 strikeouts, and led the majors in WHIP (0.891), cementing his status as one of the sport’s best pitchers.⁽⁹⁾

Team USA’s pitching staff for the WBC remains deep, with multiple other frontline starters available, but losing Skubal after a single outing removes one of the best assets from potential elimination games, where depth and continuity matter.⁽¹⁾

Opinion: I am not feeling this move at all. At the international level, when you commit to wearing your country’s uniform, doing it in a half-measure undermines the competitive purpose of the tournament. You are either in or out. Limiting yourself to a single start — especially when you are coming off back-to-back Cy Young seasons — reads less like duty and more like an overly cautious, self-centered calculation. If Skubal truly valued representing Team USA, he would fully participate and let the chips fall where they may, rather than crafting an arrangement that maximizes his personal workload at the expense of national team needs. Decisions this calculated send a message: national pride is contingent on convenience.
