The 2026 FIFA World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It is the first men’s World Cup to feature 48 teams and the first to be hosted by three nations. The structural changes to format, geography, and scheduling will materially affect competitive outcomes.

1. The Field Expands to 48 Teams

The tournament increases from 32 teams in 2022 to 48 in 2026¹. Total matches rise from 64 to 104², representing a 62.5 percent increase in match volume.

2. A 12-Group Format Replaces the Traditional Eight

The 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups of four³. Each team plays three group matches. The top two teams in each group advance automatically, along with the eight best third-place finishers, creating a 32-team knockout stage³.

3. The Champion Must Win Eight Matches

Under the revised structure, the eventual champion will play eight matches rather than seven, increasing cumulative physical load and compressing recovery windows³.

4. Three Host Nations, 16 Cities

Matches will be staged in 16 host cities: 11 in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada¹. The United States will host 78 of the 104 matches, including all games from the quarterfinals onward¹.

5. Mexico Becomes the First Three-Time Host

Mexico becomes the first nation to host three men’s World Cups (1970, 1986, 2026)¹. Estadio Azteca will host World Cup matches for a third tournament¹.

6. Automatic Qualification for the Hosts

The United States, Canada, and Mexico qualified automatically as hosts¹. The remaining 45 berths were allocated through expanded regional qualification pathways across FIFA’s six confederations⁴.

7. Oceania Secures a Guaranteed Direct Berth

For the first time, the Oceania Football Confederation receives a guaranteed direct qualification spot rather than relying solely on inter-confederation playoffs⁴.

8. The Final Is Scheduled for July 19, 2026

The championship match will be played at MetLife Stadium in the New York/New Jersey region on July 19, 2026¹.

9. The June–July Calendar Returns

Unlike the winter-scheduled 2022 tournament in Qatar, the 2026 edition returns to a traditional summer calendar¹. FIFA has confirmed that heat-management protocols, including cooling breaks when required, will be implemented⁵.

10. Record Commercial Projections

FIFA has projected record commercial revenue for the 2023–2026 cycle, driven by expanded match inventory and North American media markets².
